On 26 April 2022, the European Evangelical Alliance has publicly declared to adopt the working definition of antisemitism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). The organisation did so in a historic ceremony at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
After a commemoration ceremony in the hall of remembrance, Reverend Connie Duarte, EEA Board Member and designated Secretary General, together with Reverend Dr Frank Hinkelmann, EEA President, laid a wreath.
Dr Hinkelmann observed with deep concern that antisemitism poisons societies and Christian-Jewish relations around the globe, even in nations where there are no Jews.
He seconded the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism & Policy (ISGAP) where it states that “Holocaust remembrance is not about recollection, recall, or reporting the events surrounding the extermination of the Jews of Europe. It is about engaging in a testimony to the sanctity of the other human being and our infinite responsibility to and for the other human being.”
The European Evangelical Alliance is of the opinion that the IHRA working definition of antisemitism is a strong reminder and practical guide to create awareness and spark action to eliminate prejudice, stigma and hatred towards people on the grounds of their religion, culture, origins, identity or beliefs in all spheres of life.
The President of the EEA board concluded the event by expressing the hope that Holocaust remembrance will be a testimony to our infinite responsibility to and for the other human being.
