Guiding Greek Evangelicals during their Election Season

Earlier this year, Greece was facing a general election in a difficult environment, with, at times, overwhelming information and confusing noise.

The Greek Evangelical Alliance wanted to help their community with guidelines to help them pray, remember key biblical principles and be ready to vote intelligently. So, EEA’s socio-political representative pointed the Alliance to the election resources that EEA has written. (There is a generic pack on the EEA website and also templates suitable for national Alliances to adapt as they see fit.)

The Greek Evangelical Alliance chose to adapt the election resources. (Use DeepL or Google to see an automatic translation of their work here ) They provided biblical thoughts about politics and good government, questions to consider and many ideas for prayer. Of course, they were careful not to direct people to vote for one party or another.

The reaction was encouraging. Churches were pleased to organise prayer meetings and believers came to pray in unity for their nation. The Alliance was especially keen to inspire young people to think and pray according to biblical principles.

Fotis Romeo, President of the Greek Evangelical Alliance

“We prioritised a spiritual strategy of prayer,” said Fotis Romeos, President of the Greek Evangelical Alliance.  “When we are confused, the best thing to spend our time doing is placing ourselves before the Lord’s throne of grace. We remember that we can trust in God’s sovereign care. This helps us to put politics in perspective.”

Fotis added, “Politicians are sinful human beings. But so are we. We all need the Lord.”

The Greek Evangelical Alliance aimed to help Christians reflect on short term issues but also point to long term principles for a flourishing Greece according to biblical principles. They wished to give a voice of hope.

Chatting to EEA recently, Fotis admitted, “As small communities of Evangelicals in different nations, we can be tempted to feel insignificant.”

He then added, “But it is a joy to belong to the European Evangelical Alliance. Together we are stronger and can have a greater impact. We can share ideas and resources. And we can remind each other that, by the grace of God, we can be salt and light. He is the Lord of Lords and is building His Kingdom.”

There are plenty of other resources on the EEA website. An election pack for the European Parliament elections in June 2024 will be published shortly.
