    Twenty women and girls huddle together into a small Roma church in a Hungarian speaking village in Western Ukraine. Little babies nestle in the arms of teenage mothers, while grandmothers look after older ones. For a moment you might think you have come to a jungle, since the noise can be quite disturbing.  But little by little voices quieten and everyone finds their place.

    Beyond Hope, Expectations

    In Nairobi, the first Covid 19 lockdown was in March 2020. Psychologically and emotionally, it felt to me like the announcement of a political state of emergency, except that this was a health-related emergency, unfamiliar and frightening, expecting to see armed soldiers walking on main roads stopping anyone who was foolish enough to venture outside. I looked forward to the afternoon three o’clock government update that gave critical information because I didn’t want to be unprepared for any eventuality, especially since I am also a caregiver of an elderly parent who wonders why we should keep away from others (social distancing) since we have no quarrel with them.

While some things get quieter, other things get busier – camps, kid’s programs, less human resources in church (logistic challenges). It is also the time that we usually try and fit in our holiday, to get a break from the hectic pace of the other seasons.
