

In May 2021, Europe marked the 10th anniversary of the signing of the so-called Istanbul Convention, the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combatting violence against women and domestic violence. The vast majority of people will support the Istanbul Convention’s desire for a “Europe free from violence against women and domestic violence.” Nevertheless, this document has also caused controversy across Europe. But the European Evangelical Alliance (EEA) does not want the core issues to be lost in all the argument.

The Bible is a Christians guide for a life with God and many of us are reading this book regularly. In his letter, James writes, that we should be doers of the word, not just hearers, or readers (James 1.22-23). The word of the Lord needs to be applied. A few verses further, he says, that true religion is ‘to care for widows and orphans’. For James to be a doer of the word was to reach out to orphaned children and their mothers.

The Evangelical Alliance was originally created in London in 1846. A number of founding members were representing European countries. The European Evangelical Alliance (EEA) was founded in 1951. The EEA exists to foster unity and evangelical identity and provide a voice and platform to 23 million European evangelical Christians. The mission of the EEA is to CONNECT for com-mon purpose, EQUIP for integral mission and REPRESENT with a united voice. It is a grassroots movement from all Protestant traditions present in 36 European countries. The Brussels office of the EEA promotes active citizenship of its constituency and represents it to the European Institutions. The EEA is part of the World Evangelical Alliance (www.worldea.org)
